Called into His Flock
“Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:3 ESV
We have a new member in our family—Sam the Sheep. We got a call a few weeks ago from Hannah’s mom saying there was an orphan lamb who needed a home and would we be willing to take him in. The answer of course was a resounding, “Yea!” As we drove down to Rushville, we wondered what this little orphan lamb would need, how big would he be, and even whether he would like us. When we arrived, we found out that though he was an orphan, it wasn’t because he didn’t have a mom. It was because she already gave birth to two other lambs and she rejected him. Was it because she felt he would be too weak? Or he had too many blemishes? Or she simply had to choose where to spend her resources.
As I thought about Sam, I could not help but to think how the world treats those who are born of it and how God has adopted us into His family. The world sizes us up by how we look, what we can contribute, or how well we are like the rest of the sheep. In our sin, we are left without a shepherd, aimlessly going here and there. Yet, it was God who has made us! It is God who has redeemed us. Though we were once far off from God, He brought us near. And we no longer walk around aimlessly, but have a Shepherd who gave His life for His sheep. Be encouraged as you may face some days that are harder than others that we, who are His sheep, should simply rest in Him and know that He is in control!
